What Kind of Lighting is There?

There are four general types of lighting:
  1. Continuous -- used on a regular basis to light protected areas
  2. Standby -- same as continuous but used on occasions when more light is needed
  3. Moveable -- portable or search light systems for when light is needed in areas that are not ordinarily lit
  4. Emergency -- to be used when the regular power source fails

At the very least, you should plan to have continuous lighting with an emergency backup. There are a variety of lighting sources, such as fluorescent, incandescent, mercury vapor, metal halide, and sodium vapor.

High-pressure sodium lights are regarded as the outdoor light of choice because they provide fairly accurate color definition, are very energy efficient, and have a long lamp life.
