How Can You Mess Up Your Lighting?

Could this happen to you?

Arlene is the manager of a 24-hour convenience store located in a residential area. About half of her customers walk to her store. She recently installed lighting in the parking lot that is a lot brighter than the lights from the street lights or neighboring homes. What is Arlene's problem?

Joe runs a service station located on the side of a road used mainly by commuters. The business is closed from 9 pm to 5 am. There are no other businesses around his that are open at night, and the nearest houses are about 1000 feet away. Joe just installed a number of lights that point at the back door of the service station. He was very pleased with the lighting company because he can now read a newspaper at midnight by his back door. What will Joe likely read very soon in the crime report section of the newspaper?

Harry owns a fast-food restaurant. There is a little grassy area with a picnic table out back where his employees take their breaks. He is troubled by teenagers who hang around this area after dark. His current lighting is attached to a utility pole about twenty feet above ground. Why are the teenagers such a problem for Harry?
