Increasing Risk

Along with reducing a burglar's opportunities to commit a crime, increasing their risk of being caught may also help prevent a burglary. Some ways to increase the burglar's risk of being caught are:

Lighting - Proper use of lighting can increase the perceived risk for a burglar.

Alarms - An alarm system may deter an offender or notify someone who can interrupt a burglary.

Surveillance - Formal and informal surveillance can discourage burglars from choosing the site.
