Reducing Rewards

Burglary may be prevented by reducing the value of what an individual can steal.

Property Marking

If the property that is stolen is identifiable, the burglar may not be able to sell the stolen goods. This reduces the 'reward' value of the items.

  1. Mark any valuable equipment your business may have--computers, cash registers, tools, etc.
  2. Mark equipment with the business name or your drivers license number.
  3. Tamper proof ink-tags are another effective way of reducing the value of a product.
  4. Record the serial numbers of office equipment.

Target Removal

If there is nothing desirable for a burglar to steal then your business is at less risk of being burglarized.

  1. Keep valuable products and supplies in a safe place so that if the business is broken into, these items might not be stolen.
  2. Store business checks and cash in a safe.
  3. Leave the cash register drawer open and empty so it cannot be damaged.
  4. Remove expensive products from display windows to reduce temptation.
