They Deliver Less of the Product

Picture of a confused clerk holding a clipboard. In these scenarios the deliveryman counts on the receiver not checking the merchandise carefully and comparing it to the invoice.

Here are some of ways deliverymen deliver less product than you're paying for...

  • They remove some of the product from boxes. For example, you may think you are getting five boxes of chips with twelve bags per box, for a total of 60 bags. But the deliveryman has removed two bags from each box, so you are only getting 50 bags. Even if you look in the boxes, you probably won't think anything is wrong, because each box seems full.

    Learn how to prevent this.

Watch out if you're getting a product that doesn't pack tightly in a box. It's hard to pull off this fraud with boxes of cans or other boxes, but much easier with boxes of "fluffy" things, such as clothing, yarn, or cotton balls, or boxes of lots of loose items.

  • They deliver fewer boxes than specified. For example, the invoice specifies twelve cases of soda, but the deliveryman only leaves ten or eleven.

The best way to prevent this

Be on the lookout for this tactic if the deliveryman is trying to rush you through the count, or if there are a large number of boxes of the same product.

  • They deliver items of a smaller size than what is written on the invoice. For example, the invoice says that there are ten ½ gallon cartons of milk, but the deliveryman substitutes those with ten ¼ gallon cartons.
