A step beyond monitor-only systems are those that include a video recorder. You can have both a video recorder and a monitor, or you may decide that you only want the recorder. If you are primarily interested in getting the camera to record incidents to prosecute offenders after the crimes have happened, or if you do not have a security guard or an employee that can monitor the activity, having a video recorder only would work best for you. In this combination, input from the camera is directly recorded on tape, and it can be reviewed later. However, if you want to be able to both monitor and record, you will need monitor AND a video recorder.

Depending on how complicated the system is in the end, it can cost anywhere from $10,000 up and over $65,000, and there are also other costs, such as installation, maintenance, and new video tapes. If you will be using the video recorder day and night, it will not last long, so you might have to get a new one every few years. It is important that you evaluate losses due to criminal activity and see whether elaborate an CCTV system will pay off or not.
