Narrow Passageways

Many malls have developed in stages, and additional sections and stores were added as needs arose. In many cases, this unplanned development resulted in poorly designed connecting passageways between sections. Long empty corridors either at the entrance to the mall, or between sections of the mall, create dangerous and uncomfortable spots that shoppers tend to avoid.

Service areas can also be dangerous spots. The hallways behind stores and those leading to restrooms and telephones can be good spots for crimes to occur if they are poorly lit or isolated, or have sharp turns and dead ends.
