  1. As with anything else, for parking lots too it is better to have smaller number of entries and exits. This makes it easier to monitor who is coming in and out, and it is easier to intersect the offender.

  2. Pedestrians should not be allowed into the parking facilities, and lots should not be used as pedestrian entrances or exits to the mall. Although this would increase natural surveillance, it would open the escape route for the offenders and would make it more difficult to control who is going in and out.

  3. Only shoppers with parking ticket or pass should be able to enter the parking lot from the mall.

  4. A guard booth at the entrance to the parking lot with a ramp is always an advantage. Primarily, it is an opportunity for the guard to take a look at the person in the car, interact, or make some other kind of exchange with the driver and passengers. The more contact and less anonymity for the potential offender, the less likely they are to commit an offense.
